If the denominator is not a power of 10, how can we change the fraction to a decimal? Frequent decimals: Half, quarters, eighths, fifths, thirds.
For example, to change 1/4 into a decimal, you rewrite it as: 1.0 ÷ 4 = x. If you divide 4 into 1.0, you get .2 with a remainder 2. If you have a remainder, you need to bring another zero after the decimal.

A mixed number such as 7 1/4 can be converted to a decimal. It is implied that 7 1/4 is really 7 + 1/4 and that 7 = 7/1, therefore we are first adding the fraction 7/1 + 1/4. Since 4 is the denominator in the original fraction part we will use it as our common denominator.
