Now I would like to import my original wallet.dat from the old client which was encrypted into an new version of Bitcoin-Qt. How do I do that?

AFAIK, the only way to import wallet.dat directly is at blockchain.info. From there you then could send your coins to your Electrum or export the private key.

It gets included in the wallet.dat file, and we can see the balance including that of the imported public key. But you can't spend it. You can't sign a message.

In fact, this just happened to me after dusting off my old wallet.dat file from 2 years ago.
I have had the same problem on windows, and I wasn't able to successfully import the wallet.dat So if anyone can respond with Mac and Windows help, it would be much appreciated from another newbie.
