You can also import the wallet.dat directly into Electrum. Bitcoin Core needs to download the whole chain (as you mentioned) so that'll take a while.

I don't think that page is still supported, so importing through that will no longer work. I think you might still be able to import a wallet.dat through their normal import interface though.
